How it's calculated
The 50/30/20 rule splits take-home pay three ways: half for needs, the things you'd keep paying if you lost your income; thirty percent for wants, everything that makes life nicer but could stop; twenty percent saved, including extra debt payments. Your shares are simply each amount divided by your pay.
Needs above half of pay is the hard one. Wants can be trimmed next month; housing and transport are contracts. If needs are far over, the fix is usually one big decision, not a hundred small ones.
The rule is a starting point, not a verdict. A high-cost city, a young family, or an aggressive debt payoff all bend it. What matters is knowing your split, and Pikaflow tracks it for you month by month.
